Applies ToWindows Server 2008 Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2

Symptoms

Consider this scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008.

  • Some Group Policy preference settings are applied or updated on the computer.Note The Group Policy client service runs in an instance of the Svchost.exe process.

In this scenario, the handle count for an instance of the Svchost.exe process keeps increasing. After a while, some applications or services that are running on the computer may stop working.

Cause

This issue occurs because the allocated handles are not closed in the process when Group Policy preference settings are applied or updated.

Resolution

Note This hotfix applies to only computer that are running Windows Server 2008. If you experience the same issue on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows Vista, install hotfix 974266 to resolve the issue.For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
