Symptoms
Consider this scenario:
-
You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008.
-
Some Group Policy preference settings are applied or updated on the computer.
Note The Group Policy client service runs in an instance of the Svchost.exe process.
In this scenario, the handle count for an instance of the Svchost.exe process keeps increasing. After a while, some applications or services that are running on the computer may stop working.
Cause
This issue occurs because the allocated handles are not closed in the process when Group Policy preference settings are applied or updated.
Resolution
Note This hotfix applies to only computer that are running Windows Server 2008. If you experience the same issue on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows Vista, install hotfix 974266 to resolve the issue.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Prerequisites
To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

To use the hotfix in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008.

MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components.
