Why can't I turn Microsoft Store app updates off?
The Off option has been replaced by an option to pause automatic app updates for a limited time. You can pause updates for up to five weeks. Updates resume automatically when the pause ends.
Note
If you don’t see the pause option, your IT admin might manage app update settings on your device.
How do I pause Microsoft Store app updates?
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select your profile picture, then select Store Settings.
- Under App updates, select the pause option.
- Choose a pause duration of one to five weeks.
Automatic updates resume when the pause ends. You can still check for and install updates manually while updates are paused.
Will I lose my data during an app update?
Automatic Store updates apply to eligible apps and games. Some apps are updated directly by their publishers instead.
Does this apply to every app and game I installed from Microsoft Store?
Yes, except for apps that are directly provided and updated by their respective publishers.
What if I’m travelling or using a limited data plan?
If you don’t want apps to update while you’re travelling, you can pause automatic app updates for one to five weeks. Check your connection and device settings if you’re concerned about data usage or battery life.
I manage devices for an organisation. Will this change my app update policies?
If you and your organisation manage app updates through Group Policy or another management tool, check your existing policies to understand how updates are controlled on those devices.
I previously turned off app updates. What happens now?
If app updates were previously turned off on your device, check the App updates setting in Microsoft Store to see when automatic updates will resume.
Can I still update apps manually?
Yes. You can check for and install updates from Downloads or your library, including while automatic updates are paused.
