This article describes an issue when the DNS queries fail on a Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012-based secondary Domain Name System (DNS) Server. This issue can be resolved by one of the following update rollups:

2962409 Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 update rollup: June 20142962407 Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 update rollup: June 2014Or, you can install the hotfix that is described in this article to resolve this issue and has a prerequisite.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You configure two DNS servers (one for primary and the other for secondary) that are running Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012.

  • You sign a zone on the primary DNS server and enable the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC).

  • You add a zone on a second DNS server as a secondary zone and enable the zone transfers from the primary to the secondary.

  • You have a Name Resolution Policy Table (NRPT) configured on a client computer.

  • You send a DNS query to both the primary and the secondary DNS server from the client computer.

In this scenario, the secondary DNS server encounters multiple error messages and all DNS queries that are sent to the secondary DNS server fail.

Cause

This issue occurs because the expired resource record digital signature (RRSIG) records keep accumulating on the secondary DNS server.
