When you or an application cannot access a remote share in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 because of a permission or configuration issue, the event log data that is generated may not be descriptive enough to be helpful. For example, you may receive the following error message when you try to access a remote share in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012:
Cannot access a remote file share
This can make it difficult to troubleshoot the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol and remote storage issues. The hotfix for Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 that is mentioned in the "Hotfix information" section introduces more robust event logging for SMB.
To resolve this issue, install update rollup 2984005, or install the hotfix that is described in the "Hotfix information" section.

Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1 introduced more robust event logging for SMB, with more detailed events and improved guidance. This update for Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 adds these same capabilities. You will find these new event log entries under the following channels:
To access these events:
Open Event Viewer and then expand Applications and Services Logs.
Expand the Microsoft folder.
Expand the Windows folder.
Expand the SMBClient or SMBServer folder and then click the channels.
Note Any custom application that relies on the old event-logging mechanisms in SMB will be affected by using the new logging framework and event channels that are introduced by this hotfix.
