Summary
If a desktop app can’t be installed, uninstalled, or updated in Windows 11, built‑in recovery options and troubleshooting steps can help resolve common issues such as incomplete installs or corrupted app data.
Note: Use these steps for Windows programs. If the app was installed from Microsoft Store, see Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.
Try the following troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.
-
Go to Start  > Power  > Restart .
-
Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
-
Select the app, then select Advanced options.
-
Select Repair.
-
If the issue continues, select Reset.
Note:Â Not all desktop apps support repair or reset options.
-
Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
-
Select the app, then select Uninstall.
-
Follow the on‑screen instructions.
Windows 11 may automatically recommend troubleshooting steps when installation or removal fails. Follow the guidance provided in the error message or notification.
Malware or security software issues
If you’re trying to remove malware or a suspicious app:
-
Use Windows Security to run a scan.
-
Remove the app only after threats are cleaned.
If the above steps did not resolve the issue, contact the app publisher for support or consider reinstalling Windows 11 using Reset this PC (keep your files). For more information, see how to reset your PC.
Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025
After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Your PC will still work, but we recommend moving to Windows 11.
Summary
If you can’t install, uninstall, or update a desktop program in Windows 10, the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter can automatically fix common issues such as corrupted registry keys or incomplete uninstall data.
Use the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter
Note: Use these steps for Windows programs. If you're having problems with an app you got from Microsoft Store, go to Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.
Download the troubleshooter:
-
First, you'll need to download the troubleshooter.
-
When prompted, select Run or Open.
The troubleshooter provides steps for you to follow. If a program isn't listed in the uninstall options, you'll be asked for that program's product code. To access the code, you'll need a tool for reading MSI files, which is typically available to IT professionals. You'll find the product code in the property table of the MSI file.
What it fixes
The troubleshooter helps fix problems that:
-
Corrupt registry keys on 64-bit operating systems.
-
Corrupt registry keys that control the update data.
-
Prevent new programs from being installed.
-
Prevent existing programs from being completely uninstalled or updated.
-
Block you from uninstalling a program through Add or Remove Programs (or Programs and Features) in Control Panel.
If you're trying to remove malware, you can use Windows Security (or another antivirus tool), or you can use the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool.
