Audio overviews for Documents

Audio overviews are a way to listen to a summary or discussion about your files. There are two styles available:

  • Summary Style (the default experience): A single AI host gives you a quick and clear summary of the main points in your file.

  • Podcast Style: Two AI hosts engage in a natural, conversational discussion, adding depth and nuance as they explore the key ideas in your content.

If you are use SharePoint for work or are a school user, you can generate audio overviews for Word documents, PDFs and Teams meetings recordings with AI.

Note: This feature is available in English only for now.

Create an audio overview in SharePoint

  1. Open your SharePoint site.

  2. Ensure you're signed into your SharePoint site for work or school account.

  3. Locate the Word document, PDF, or Teams meeting recording you want to create an audio overview for. Select (...) next to the file or open the file and swipe up.

  4. Select Create an audio overview.

Continue to navigate around SharePoint for work or other apps on your phone while listening to an audio overview. 

Audio player features

The audio player comes with full audio controls, including:

  • Pause/Play

  • Rewind/Fast Forward

  • Playback Speed Controls

  • View Transcript

  • Switch to podcast style/Switch to summary style

  • Save Audio Overview to OneDrive (see limitations)

Limitations

  • This feature is supported for English files only.

  • The file types supported by this feature are currently limited to PDFs, Word docs and Teams meeting recordings

  • Audio overviews are AI-generated, so there may be some inaccuracies or audio glitches

  • Your file needs to have at least 200 words in order to generate an audio overview

  • It can take a few minutes to generate an audio overview

  • You can only save the audio overview if your file is not encrypted

  • Audio overview generation may be subject to daily usage limits.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Audio overviews for SharePoint News Post

Listen to an audio overview is an AI skill available with the Knowledge Agent in SharePoint News posts. This allows a user to listen to a quick AI generated audio summary of the news item. 

Select Listen to an audio overview from the Knowledge Agent in a SharePoint News post will open an audio player in the center of the screen and will automatically play the audio summary after a brief intro music. 

Users can use the following operations: 

  • Play/Pause

  • Change play back speed

  • Rewind / Fastforward

  • See the transcript from the “…”

Note: This feature is available only with SharePoint News posts for Copilot licensed users. This is also available for English language news posts.
