High memory usage by the Message Queuing service when you perform a remote transactional read on a Message Queuing 5.0 queue in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You enable Microsoft Message Queuing 5.0 (also known as MSMQ 5.0) on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You create a transactional Message Queuing queue on the computer.

  • You add messages and fill the queue.

  • You run a client application that performs a remote transactional read on the queue.

In this scenario, the memory usage of the Message Queuing service (Mqsvc.exe) is at a very high level.

Cause

This issue occurs because a cleanup operation is not performed after the remote transactional read finishes successfully. Therefore, a memory leak occurs.
