Notes:
-
The information in this article only applies to when you're signed in with your Microsoft account. For example, a personal outlook.com email address.
-
For information about watermarks when you’re signed in with your work or school account, see Watermarks on content generated or altered by using AI in Microsoft 365 at work or school.
To help provide additional transparency about what content has been generated or altered by using AI in Microsoft 365, you can add watermarks to images, videos, or audio content.
Here are some examples:
-
A visual watermark is added to an image that you alter by using Microsoft Designer.
-
A visual watermark is added to a video that you generate with Clipchamp.
-
An audio watermark is added to an audio overview that you generate with Copilot from a Word document.
Here’s an example of a watermark in the bottom right corner of an image:
In some cases, the watermark might appear in another location on the image or the watermark might appear as text that says “AI-Generated.”
For audio content, the watermark will verbally state “This audio is generated by AI.” The watermark will be heard at either the beginning or at the end of the audio content.
Notes:
-
Watermarks are currently available only for images and audio content.
-
We anticipate that watermarks will be available for video content by the end of March 2026.
How to turn on watermarks
To turn on watermarks, do the following steps:
-
Sign in to the Microsoft privacy dashboard with your Microsoft account.
-
In the dashboard, go Privacy > Empower your productivity > Copilot.
-
Turn on the toggle under Include a watermark when content from Microsoft 365 is AI-generated.
After you turn on watermarks, a watermark will be added to any new image, video, or audio content that you generate by using AI in Microsoft 365. A watermark will also be added if you use AI in Microsoft 365 to alter any existing image, video, or audio content. You're always responsible for following the Microsoft Code of Conduct, including not generating or sharing deceptive AI content.
Notes:
-
You can’t customize the placement or the wording of the watermark.
-
This setting applies to all devices where you’re signed in with the same Microsoft account.
Additional information added to the metadata of content that’s generated or altered by AI in Microsoft 365
Even if you don’t turn on watermarks, some information disclosing the use of AI is added to the metadata of images, videos, and audio content that you generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365.
For example, the additional information added to the metadata of the content might include which AI model was used, which app generated the content, or when the content was generated. For more information, see the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) website.
