Symptoms

Intermittent service terminations may occur after you install any of the TLS 1.2 support updates for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 that are described in 3135244.

On January 29, 2016, Microsoft released the TLS 1.2 update for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2. We have identified a defect in the update that causes intermittent service termination when you try to connect to an instance of SQL Server. When this problem occurs, an error message that resembles either of the following messages is logged in the SQL Server Error log:

Resolution

For customers to protect themselves from the service termination issue, we recommend that they install the TLS 1.2 support updates for Microsoft SQL Server that are described in KB 3135244 if their SQL Server version is listed in the "Affected versions" table in the previous section. We have published updated versions of SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 that address the defect that was identified in the TLS 1.2 update. We recommend that you use this new version to update all SQL Server instances to which the TLS 1.2 update was applied.
