Symptoms

Assume that you have Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 Service Pack 2 (SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2) installed on the computer. When you try to create or open a SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 database file (.sdf file) on a shared network folder, you receive the following error message:

Error: Internal error. Cannot open shared memory.


Additionally, an exception that resembles the following is generated:

Exception type: System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException

Message=Internal error: Cannot open the shared memory region.

Source=SQL Server Compact ADO.NET Data Provider

HResult=-2147467259

NativeError=25118


Note This issue occurs only in SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must exit all applications that are using SQL Server Compact. Then, you must uninstall any installations of Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 and Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 x64.

Note This SQL Server Compact hotfix has a complete .msi package and does not replace a partial list of files from a previous installation.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.
