KB922578 - FIX: Lots of messages that have message ID 19030 and message ID 19031 are logged in SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 Errorlog file when you use SQL Server Profile in SQL Server 2005, in SQL Server 2008 or in SQL Server 2008 R2

Bug #: 950 (SQL Hotfix)

Bug #: 931 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

Summary

This article describes the following about this hotfix release:

  • The issues that are fixed by the hotfix package

  • The prerequisites for installing the hotfix package

  • Whether you must restart the computer after you install the hotfix package

  • Whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package

  • Whether you must make any registry changes

  • The files that are contained in the hotfix package

Symptoms

In SQL Server 2005, in SQL Server 2008 or in SQL Server 2008 R2, lots of messages that have message ID 19030 and message ID 19031 are logged in the Errorlog file. This issue occurs when many SQL Server Profiler traces are started and then stopped. The messages resemble the following:

Message_idText

19030SQL Trace ID %d was started by login "%s".

19031SQL Trace stopped. Trace ID = '%d'. Login Name = '%s'.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 and in SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2.

More Information

After you apply this hotfix, trace flag 3688 must be turned on when you start the SQL Server service. When trace flag 3688 is turned on, error 19030 and error 19031 are not written to the SQL Server Errorlog file. If trace flag 3688 is not turned on when you start the SQL Server service, this problem still occurs. You must install hotfix build 9.00.2175.00 or a later hotfix build before you can turn on trace flag 3688.

In earlier versions of SQL Server, the sp_altermessage stored procedure can suppress system messages that have message IDs that are less than 50000. When these messages are suppressed, the messages are not written to the SQL Server Errorlog file. However, this behavior is not supported in SQL Server 2005.
