Symptoms

When you use a Microsoft Surface 2 device, you are prompted to enter your BitLocker recovery key after you turn on or restart the device or you resume the device from the sleep state. These messages may be random or they may occur every time that you try to restore the device to operation.

Note These BitLocker-related messages are the only visible symptom. This problem does not affect your system in any other way.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install an update that is now available for the Microsoft Surface 2 device.

Note This issue does not affect the Microsoft Surface Pro 2. This update applies only to the Microsoft Surface RT 2.

To retrieve your BitLocker recovery key if you do not have it available, follow these steps:

  1. Open a browser window on another trusted computer or mobile device.

  2. Go to the following Windows website:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/recoverykey

  3. Sign in by using the same Microsoft account name and password that you use on your Microsoft Surface 2 device.
