Reading Coach language settings

Language settings for 81 locales have been added to Reading Coach to help with the overall application experience, Paste a Passage, Create a Story, and Word Practice. With 81 different locales from around the world, the Reading Coach app is now better for learners seeking to navigate the app and better reading fluency in multiple languages.

Reading Coach is a helpful tool available on the web at coach.microsoft.com and also available on the windows store. It helps you read better and say words correctly. Now, it works in more languages than just US English. This means you can navigate the application, and practice reading in other languages, not just your own. It helps people who are learning to read in a new language or trying to get better at a second language.

Supported languages and locales

Note: Reading Coach picks one main language for each place. For example, if you are in Mexico, it will use Spanish-Mexico. If you want to read in a different language, you need to change your browser and reading settings. This lets you use Reading Coach in the language you prefer.

These languages are available now on Reading coach for Paste a Passage, Word Practice, and for the app itself. Create a story has a separate list of languages for it that are listed in the section below.

Learners can also now read in 14 different English dialects. Reading Coach will track your pronunciation all 14 of the English dialects listed below:

Paste a passage

These new reading languages in 81 locales allow you to have content in one language but paste text for reading practice in another.

You can also paste content in their native tongue as the application locale. For example, you can set your language settings to US English but paste a reading language in Spanish. Reading Coach's AI will recognize that this is content for Spanish and return an assessment of your performance graded accurately on your pronunciation.

Now when you paste content written in a foreign language into the passage text box, Reading Coach's AI will detect the language of that content. (See the screenshot below.)

Choosing the button labeled with your current reading language will produce a pop-up window from which you can choose your preferred reading language from a dropdown menu.

Language selection in 13 languages continues to be useful when learners are creating a story in Reading Coach.

How to set reading language for creating a story

Navigate to the Create a Story feature in reading coach.
Choose the language button in the top right corner.
Select a reading language from the dropdown menu.

The language selection will take effect, translating the app features into content for the selected language.

The screenshot above shows the selected language as "Spanish-Mexico" so all the text for the create a story feature including the names of the AI animal actors has changed to reflect that selection. The learner will be listened to in the chosen language.
