Save places and set location alerts

Saved places make it easy to see where your family is in the Microsoft Family Safety app, whether it’s from your family list or the map.​ Note: only organizers see the family list view.

Location alerts use saved places to let you know when your family members arrive at or depart from specific places. Location alerts are a premium feature available with a Microsoft 365 Family subscription. Organizers (typically adults in the family) can buy a subscription in the Family Safety app or online.

Note:  Location based features like save places and location alerts currently only support 1 device per Microsoft Account. 

Save places

In the Microsoft Family Safety app, you can save places from your family map or settings. Saved places are shared with your family. This means if anyone in your family group saves a place, it’s available for your whole family to use. It also means anyone in the family group can delete a saved place as long as it’s not being used for a location alert. If you ever need to leave your family group and no longer want saved places to be shared with them, you’ll need to remove saved places before leaving the family group.

Map

From your family map, tap Add a place > Enter the address and give it a name > Save

Settings

Organizers:

From your family list, tap the home or menu icon to the left of Your family > Settings > find yourself under the family members list > Places > Add a place > Enter the address and give it a name > Save

Members:

From your activity screen, tap the home icon to the left of your name > Settings > Places > Add a place > Enter the address and give it a name > Save

Set up location alerts

Location alerts are available on Android devices and are coming soon on iPhone.

In the Family Safety app, you can set up location alerts from your family map or settings.

When you set a location alert, the app will tell you when a family member arrives or departs a saved place. For location alerts to work, your family member must have location sharing turned on and you must have saved places. You can always create a saved place when setting a location alert.

Map

From your family map, tap a family member > Arrives or Departs > select their current location, a saved place, or add a place > select whether to be told Once or Always

Settings

Organizers:

From your family list, tap the home or menu icon to the left of Your family > Settings > Arrives and departs > find the member and tap Tell me when > select Arriving or Departing > add a place or select a saved place > select whether to be told Once or Always

Members:

From your activity screen, tap the home icon or menu icon to the left of your name > Settings > Arrives and departs > find the member and tap Tell me when > select Arriving or Departing > add a place or select a saved place > select whether to be told Once or Always

Removing saved places and location alerts

Remove a saved place

How you remove or delete a saved place depends on what device you’re using. If you need to leave your family group, any place you saved will be available to them after you leave unless you delete the places before leaving the family group.

If a saved place is being used for a location alert, you’ll need to remove the location alert before you can remove the saved place. If someone other than you created the location alert, you’ll have to ask them to remove it. 

Organizers:

From your family list, tap the home icon to the left of Your family > Settings > Places > swipe left on the place you want to remove > Remove > tap Yes to remove this place

Members:

From your activity screen, tap the home icon to the left of your name > Settings > Places > swipe left on the place you want to remove > Remove > tap Yes to remove this place

Organizers:

From your family list, tap the menu icon to the left of Your family > Settings > Places > tap the 3 vertical dots next to the place you want to remove > Delete > tap Yes to remove this place

Members:

From your activity screen, tap the menu icon to the left of your name > Settings > Places > tap the 3 vertical dots next to the place you want to remove > Delete > tap Yes to remove this place

Remove a location alert

How you remove or delete a location alert depends on what kind of device you’re using.

Organizers:

From your family list, tap the home icon to the left of Your family > Settings > Arrives and departs > swipe left on the location alert you want to remove > Remove > tap Yes to remove this alert

Members:

From your activity screen, tap the home icon to the left of your name > Settings > Arrives and departs > swipe left on the location alert you want to remove > Remove > tap Yes to remove this alert

Organizers:

From your family list, tap the menu icon to the left of Your family > Settings > Arrives and departs > tap the 3 vertical dots next to the location alert you want to remove > Delete > tap Yes to remove this location alert

Members:

From your activity screen, tap the menu icon to the left of your name > Settings > Arrives and departs > tap the 3 vertical dots next to the location alert you want to remove > Delete > tap Yes to remove this location alert
