Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you have a volume that is referenced in the PATH system-environment variable. If the volume is inaccessible, the Lanmanserver service does not start after you restart the computer or after you stop and then restart the service manually. Additionally, event ID 7023 is logged in the System log.

Note The scenarios in which a volume is inaccessible include the following:

  • The volume is offline. In this scenario, event ID 7023 and the following "The device is not ready" error message are logged in the System log when this issue occurs:

    Log Name: System
    Source: Service Control Manager
    Event ID: 7023
    Task Category: None
    Level: Error
    Keywords: Classic
    Description:
The Server service terminated with the following error:
    The device is not ready.

  • The read and write operations to the volume are blocked. In this scenario, event ID 7023 and the following "Incorrect function" error message are logged in the System log when this issue occurs:

    Log Name: System
    Source: Service Control Manager
    Event ID: 7023
    Task Category: None
    Level: Error
    Keywords: Classic
    Description:
The Server service terminated with the following error:
    Incorrect function.

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2 and for Windows 7" section. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
