What is Phone plugin?

The Phone plugin is an extension for Microsoft Copilot (Learn more) that enables connectivity between Copilot and Android mobile devices via the Link to Windows host app. It facilitates a more personalized and tailored AI assistant experience by leveraging phone data access.

How to use Phone plugin?

To make use of the Phone plugin, follow these steps:

  1. Access Copilot: Visit the Copilot platform at https://copilot.microsoft.com/.

  2. Account Login: Sign in to your Copilot account using your personal Microsoft account credentials.

  3. Activate the Phone Plugin: Navigate to the Copilot plugin directory and locate the Phone plugin. Toggle it on to activate.

  4. Engage with the Plugin: Prompt the Phone plugin by posing a phone-related query to Copilot, such as "Summarize my text messages."

  5. Link your Device:

    • For existing Link to Windows - Phone Link  users, please skip this step.

    • For new users, it's essential to link your Android mobile device. Follow the instructions provided by Copilot, which may include scanning a QR code to complete the synchronization process.

  6. Permission Authorization: To utilize this feature fully, grant the required permissions, specifically for messages (SMS) and contacts. This enables full functionality.

Note: Remember to enable the plugin each time you open a new tab to access Copilot.

What can I do with the Phone plugin?

The Phone plugin leverages AI to access messages (SMS) and contacts on your mobile device for various tasks, enabling remote use of phone capabilities, including:

  • Help Get Info: Retrieve contact or messages (SMS) information beyond mere phone numbers. For example, inquire about nearby pizza places using a contact's home address.

  • Help Summarize: Condense key points from your messages (SMS) conversations over the past week into concise summaries.

  • Help Write: Easily compose text messages for different purposes, such as drafting birthday party invitations with a specific tone.

  • Help Act: Direct Copilot to send composed text messages on your behalf, simplifying tasks like sending party invitations, e.g., "Message Frank for the party invite."

  • Help Remember: Retrieve information from messages (SMS) responses, such as the number of attendees for a party based on invitation responses.

  • Set Alarm or Timer: Directly set alarms or timers on your phone within Copilot and receive notifications at the scheduled time. For instance, you can say, “Remind me in 20 minutes” to set a phone timer for your short break.

  • Get Location and Route: Access map points or routes on your phone’s map app. You can ask for directions to a specific location and review the route on your phone.

These are just a few examples of the Phone plugin's capabilities; it offers numerous other possibilities beyond these.

Why can't the Phone plugin send messages, set alarms, or set timers?

You need to make sure that you have enabled Link to Windows and that the Phone plugin is enabled in your tab to access Copilot.

Is there a browser requirement to use the Phone plugin?

No, the Phone plugin is web-based and supports any browser.

Can I use the Phone plugin on mobile devices?

No, the Phone plugin currently supports only Copilot on the web (Copilot.Microsoft.com, Bing.com) or the Copilot sidebar in Edge.

Why can't the Phone plugin use the phone map?

First, ensure you have at least one map app installed on your phone. Then, make sure Link to Windows is enabled with internet access and that the Phone plugin is activated in your browser tab to access Copilot.

I cannot find the Plugin option. Why?

  • Ensure you are signed in with a personal account (not a work account) in Copilot.

  • If using the Edge sidebar Copilot, make sure your browser is signed in with a personal account.
