Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install a printer on a computer (computer A), and then you share the printer.

  • You select the Always install the best software from Windows Update option button on another computer (computer B) that is running Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, or Window Server 2012 R2.Note The option button is located in the Device Installation Settings dialog box under the Hardware tab of the System Properties dialog box. This option enables automatic searching of Windows Update for device drivers.

  • You connect computer B to the shared printer.

In this scenario, computer B may use a driver that is already installed locally. This may be a limited driver that does not support the full capabilities of the printer. We expect that computer B can download the best driver from the Windows Update service, but it cannot.
