Border and shading options in Word

The content and steps in this article apply to Word for Microsoft 365 and other desktop versions of Word for Windows.

To set your border and shading options in Word, go to the Design tab, then select Page Borders. In the Borders and Shading dialog box, choose Options. Then, choose from the following options:

  • Margin Set the margin values (0-31pt) for the top, left, right, and bottom borders. The settings are based on the Measure from setting.

  • Measure from Set the margin values to measure from the edge of the page or the edge of the text.

  • Options:

    • Align paragraph borders and table edges with page border When cleared, this option may cause double lines when paragraphs or tables have borders in addition to the page border. This option appears only when Measure from is set to Text.
    • Always display on top Displays the border in front of elements that extend outside the border area.This allows an image to extend to the edge while keeping the border visible. If unchecked, the border will be covered by elements outside the border.
    • Surround header Specifies whether the page border includes the header area. When cleared, the header is outside the border. This option appears only when Measure from is set to Text.
    • Surround footer Specifies whether the page border includes the footer area. When cleared, the footer is outside the border. This option appears only when Measure from is set to Text.
    • Preview Shows how the page borders will look based on the settings you've chosen.
