Copilot for Legal: Transparency Documentation

Purpose

Copilot for Legal is a set of legal capabilities for Copilot in Word desktop and Cowork, designed to support legal professionals with contract review, redlining, drafting, playbook alignment, and clause analysis within their existing document workflows.

Advisory status

All outputs generated by Copilot are advisory only. Copilot does not provide legal advice and has not been designed or approved for that purpose. Outputs do not constitute legal advice and must not be treated as a substitute for qualified legal judgment or professional legal counsel.

Capabilities

  • Understand legal documents. Analyze full agreements, drill into specific clauses, and compare versions to spot risks and obligations. Copilot provides citations that link directly to the source language so reviewers can quickly verify responses. Highlight all defined terms in a document. Reason over context intelligently retrieved using Work IQ from across the M365 ecosystem such as emails, documents, spreadsheets and presentations and web searches.
  • Make precise edits. Tell Copilot what to change and it produces negotiation-ready redlines with tracked changes across relevant sections, minimizing unnecessary edits and preserving original formatting.
  • Negotiate with confidence. Copilot works inside documents that already contain tracked changes, separating prior revisions from new proposals so negotiation history is retained.
  • Run structured playbook‑based contract reviews. Copilot reviews contracts against playbooks, addressing conflicts and recommending edits to align with internal standards and approved language.
  • Draft new contracts. Tell Copilot to generate new draft contracts based on templates or previous contracts.
  • Pull information from third-party plugins. Copilot can retrieve information from partner third-party information sources when responding to queries.
  • Kick off workflows to draft documents, create presentations, update spreadsheets, write emails and more from within Word desktop and Cowork.
  • Keep sensitive workflows secure. Copilot runs within Microsoft 365 security, compliance, and governance controls your organization already uses for legal documents and standards.

  • Extract obligations and deadlines. Create a tracker of obligations and key dates.

Limitations and known failure modes

  • Outputs may be inaccurate or incomplete. Copilot can produce fluent, plausible-sounding content that is legally incorrect. This includes potential inaccuracies with citations. We encourage users to check any output returned by Copilot.
  • Copilot is not jurisdiction-aware by default. Recommendations may not reflect the law applicable in a given jurisdiction.
  • Outputs reflect model training data and may not incorporate live legal databases or account for recent legislative or regulatory changes.
  • Apparent confidence or fluency in output is not an indicator of legal accuracy.
  • In complex or lengthy documents, Copilot may miss relevant clauses or misapply playbook guidance.
  • Copilot may miss nuance present in legal documents.
  • There could be variations in performance across languages, with English performing best at the time of releasing. The team tested these legal skills primarily for EN-US. Improving performance across languages is a key investment area, and recent models have led to improved performance.
  • Information derived from third-party connectors may be inaccurate or incomplete.

Copilot while using legal skills and plugins is designed to operate under active human oversight. Users are expected to review all AI-generated outputs, apply their own professional judgment, and independently decide how, or whether, to act on any output.

Furthermore, Copilot’s workflows are designed to surface each step to the user to support inspection and verification. Copilot is not intended to provide legal advice. No output should be relied upon or implemented without review by a qualified legal professional.
