The AutoNumOut field automatically numbers paragraphs in outline style. This field is considered obsolete but is provided for compatibility with Microsoft Word 2000 or earlier versions.
Use the built-in heading styles to format headings in the document, and then insert an AutoNumOut field at the beginning of each heading paragraph. The numbers reflect the heading levels that correspond to the heading styles.
Note
- The AutoNumOut field is obsolete and is provided only for compatibility with documents created in earlier versions of Word. For new documents, use built-in heading styles and modern numbering features, such as numbered lists or the ListNum field.
- You can’t manually update an AutoNumOut field.
- Word doesn't display the result of an AutoNumOut field if the field is nested within an IF field.
Syntax
When you view the AutoNumOut field code in your document, the syntax looks like this:
{ AUTONUMOUT }
Note
A field code tells the field what to show. Field results are what is shown in the document after having evaluated the field code. To toggle between viewing the field code and the field code results, press Alt+F9.
