Pages print upside down in a two-sided Word document with mixed orientations

Applies To
Microsoft Word 2010 Word 2013

Important

This article applies to Word 2010 and Word 2013, which are no longer supported. The information is retained for people who still use these versions. For help with a supported version, see the current guidance for duplex printing in Word.

Symptoms

When you print a multi-page two-sided document with mixed page orientations only one binding direction can be set for the entire document.

Cause

When you select Print on Both Sides for a document that contains both portrait and landscape pages, Word applies the same binding setting to every page in the print job. The binding setting does not change when the page orientation changes. As a result, pages in one orientation may print upside down.

This behavior is by design in Word 2010 and Word 2013. The selected long-edge or short-edge binding setting applies to the entire print job, regardless of whether individual pages use portrait or landscape orientation.

Resolution

Print the portrait and landscape pages as separate two-sided print jobs:

  1. Print the portrait pages using the binding setting appropriate for portrait orientation.

  2. Print the landscape pages separately using the binding setting appropriate for landscape orientation.

The names and locations of the binding settings depend on the printer and printer driver. If needed, check the printer documentation or contact the printer manufacturer.
