The object cache is used internally to optimize page rendering by storing properties of sites, page layouts, and pages. The object cache reduces the amount of traffic between the Web server and a SQL database. This results in higher throughput of rendered pages, thereby increasing the number of pages that can be delivered to clients.
You can optimize the object cache for a site collection by specifying several settings:

The size of the object cache.
Specifying a larger number can enhance performance for some large sites at the cost of memory on each front-end Web server.

When to check the server for changes in a cross-list query.
A cross-list query is one that displays content from multiple lists or libraries. Some Web Parts, particularly the Content Query Web Part, often display items from multiple lists and libraries. You can specify to check the server for every cross-list query or you can specify an amount of time (in seconds) in which the results can be drawn from the cache. This can improve performance, particularly for site collections that contain numerous cross-list queries.

A multiplier to use to retrieve more results than are requested.
The multiplier is used to ensure that all client requests are accommodated in a cross-list query and a valid set of results is delivered.
You can also use the Object Cache Settings page to reset (flush) both the object cache and the disk-based cache on an individual server or for the entire server farm.

Configure the object cache

On the Site Actions menu

Under Site Collection Administration, click Site collection object cache.

In the Object Cache Size section, type a value in the box to specify the amount of memory (in megabytes) that you want the object cache to use.

In the Cross List Query Cache Changes section, select one of the following options:

If your content changes frequently and you want to display the most accurate results possible, select Check the server for changes every time a cross list query runs .

On site collections where the improved performance you get from caching does not compromise the accuracy of the results, select Use the cached result of a cross list query for this many seconds.

In the Cross List Query Results Multiplier section, type a number from 1 through 10 to use as a results multiplier.
Type a larger number if your site collection has unique security permissions applied to many lists and sites. Type a smaller number if your site collection does not have unique permissions on each list or sites. A smaller multiplier uses less memory per query.

Click OK.
Flush the object cache or the disk-based cache

On the Site Actions menu

Under Site Collection Administration, click Site collection object cache.

In the Object Cache Reset section, do one or more of the following:

To force the current server to flush its object cache, select the Object Cache Flush check box.

To force all servers in the farm to flush their object caches, select the Force all servers in the farm to flush their object caches check box.
When you select one or more of the check boxes, all entries in object caches will be flushed immediately when you click OK. If you do not select any of the check boxes, caches will manage the expiration of items based on when they time out or are changed in the site.

In the Disk Based Cache Reset section, do one or more of the following:

To force the server to reset its disk-based cache, click the Force this server to reset its disk based cache check box.

To force all servers to reset their disk-based caches, click the Force all servers in the farm to reset their disk based cache check box.
If you select one or more of the check boxes, all entries in the disk caches will be flushed immediately when you click OK. If you do not select any of the check boxes, the disk caches will be left as is and expiration of the items will be managed with items being removed as they are changed in the site or the disk size is exceeded.
