Save a copy of a workbook to your computer

To save a copy of your workbook from OneDrive to your computer, first download it.

After downloading the workbook, you can open the workbook and make any changes - if you have the Excel desktop application. Don't have the Excel desktop application? Not a problem; try it out at Office.com.

To do this:

  1. Select File > Create a Copy > Download a Copy.

  2. If Excel asks whether to open or save the workbook, select Save.

    Note

    If you select Open instead of Save, the workbook opens in Protected View. Depending on your browser, you might not be asked this question.

You can either open the workbook or open the folder containing the workbook. Open the folder if you want to rename or move the workbook to another location.

Open the workbook

Follow these steps to open a workbook:

  1. After downloading your workbook, open Excel and select File > Open. Select your file.
  2. In the yellow Protected View bar, select Enable Editing.
  3. Select File > Save a Copy > Browse.
  4. Choose a folder where you want to save the workbook.
  5. In the File name box, type a name.
  6. Select Save.

After downloading your workbook, select Open folder and do one of the following steps:

  • To rename the workbook, select the workbook, select Rename, and type a new name.
  • To move the workbook, select the workbook, select Move to, and choose a new location.

Note

The Ribbon must be displayed in the Downloads window to see the rename and move options. If you don't see the Ribbon, select the View tab at the very top of the window, and then select the pushpin icon Button image. on the right. The Rename and Move options appear on the Home tab.
