Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
You have a Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain environment that contains Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 domain clients.
The Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 domain clients have two disk drives. They are Drive C and Drive D.
There are more than 500 users in the organizational unit (OU) on the Active Directory domain.
There is a Group Policy setting for the users in the OU to redirect certain folders as follows:
- The Downloads folder is redirected to D:\Users\%USERNAME%\Downloads.
- The Music folder is redirected to D:\Users\%USERNAME%\Music.
- The Pictures folder is redirected to D:\Users\%USERNAME%\Pictures.
- The Videos folder is redirected to D:\Users\%USERNAME%\Videos.
There is no problem for these users to apply such a Group Policy setting.
Some new Active Directory users are created in the same OU.
In this scenario, as the number of user profiles increases, the logon process for new users takes significantly longer. For example, the logon process may take as long as 6 hours.
How to obtain this update or hotfix
To resolve this issue, we have released an update through Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. And we also have released a hotfix for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
Important Do not install a language pack after you install this update or hotfix. If you do, the language-specific changes in the update or hotfix will not be applied, and you will have to reinstall the update or hotfix. For more information, see Add language packs to Windows.

This update is provided as an Optional update from Windows Update.
How to obtain the update from Windows Update
To obtain this update from Windows Update, follow these steps:
- Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.
- In the search box, type Windows Update, and then tap or click Windows Update.
- In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
- If you see a message telling you that optional updates are available, or telling you to review optional updates, click the message to view the optional updates.
- In the list, select the check box for update 3029432 under Optional, and then tap or click Install.

Method 3: Hotfix package for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft Support. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article.
