Symptoms

In Microsoft Microsoft SQL Server 2016, when you make a call to a Tabular Object Model (TOM) API that crosses AppDomain boundaries (for example, when you use .NET Remoting, or WCF together with custom exception serialization), you experience the following exception:

System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationException
You expect a TOM exception instead. For example, you expect Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Tabular.TomValidationException.

Resolution

The issue was first fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server:
