Symptoms
Assume that you connect to an instance of SQL Server 2014 or 2016 by using Microsoft ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server. When you execute a query that retrieves data of the sql_variant data type, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

Resolution
This problem was fixed in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:
- Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2016 SP1
- Cumulative Update 2 for SQL Server 2016
- Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2014 SP2
- Cumulative Update 8 for SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1
