Make a phone call on Surface Duo

You can use Surface Duo 2 for a lot of things—including phone calls. The Phone app is already installed, so you’re ready to start calling.

  • Surface Duo 2 phone screen.

  1. Do one of the following, depending on if your Surface Duo is opened or closed when you get a call:

    • If your Surface Duo is opened, tap Answer in the notification at the top.
If you tap Decline, that sends the call to voicemail.

    • If your Surface Duo is closed, open it, then fold the left screen back to answer the call. When it's closed and you get a call, the Glance Bar will light up.

  2. Talk with your ear against the screen on the right or tap Speaker to talk on speakerphone. When talking on speaker, sound comes from the left screen.

  3. Tap the End call button to hang up when you’re done talking.

Note: If you don't want to answer a call automatically when you fold the left screen back, you can turn off Fold back to answer in Settings > Surface Duo features.

Tip: Don't want to answer a call? Open your Surface Duo slightly to see who's calling, then close your device to ignore the call if you don't want to talk.

  1. Open the Phone app.

  2. Tap Dialpad  > dial the phone number > Call .

  1. Open the Phone app.

  2. Tap Contacts > the name of the person you want to call > Call .

  1. Open the Phone app.

  2. Tap Dialpad  > dial the emergency phone number for your area > Call .

  3. During the call, provide additional information to the emergency operator—including information you might see on your screen.

Tip: There’s another way to make an emergency call—press and hold the Power button, then tap Emergency in the menu on the top.

You can use real-time text (RTT) in a call. Whether you can use RTT depends on your mobile carrier. Check with them to see if they support it. If they do, you’ll need to turn on RTT before you can use it during a call.

  1. Open the Phone app.

  2. Tap the Menu (three vertical dots) in the upper right > Settings > Accessibility.

  3. Tap Real-time text (RTT) call, then choose Visible during a call or Always visible.

For detailed info about how to use RTT for a phone call, see Use real-time text (RTT) with calls on the Android Help website.

If your mobile carrier supports it, you can make calls over Wi-Fi instead of using a mobile connection. For example, this can be helpful for times when you’re connected to Wi-Fi you trust, but don’t get a good mobile network connection in that area. You can choose your preferences for Wi-Fi calling—including when you want to use it when making phone calls.

  1. Open Settings, then tap Network & internet > Mobile network > Wi-Fi calling.
If you don’t see Wi-Fi calling as an option, that means it’s not supported by your mobile carrier.

  2. Turn on Wi-Fi calling.

  3. If prompted, confirm your emergency address.

  4. Tap Calling preference and choose your preference.

  5. Open the Phone app, then make a call as you normally would.

  1. Open the Phone app.

  2. Tap Dialpad , then tap and hold 1 to call your voicemail.

  3. Follow the voice prompts in your voicemail.

Tip: Many mobile carriers have a visual voicemail app, which lets you see your voicemail messages in a list and listen to them there. To find out if your mobile carrier offers this, visit your mobile carrier’s website, or open the Play Store app and search for a visual voicemail app from your mobile carrier.
