This article describes update 5002138 for Microsoft Office 2016 that was released on February 1, 2022.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to Office subscription or Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see What version of Office am I using?).

Improvements and fixes

This update fixes an issue in which multiple users cannot open a Microsoft Access database simultaneously when the network paths include DFS Namespaces, short file names, or mapped drives. Additionally, one of the following error messages occurs:

  • Could not use ‘path to database.accdb’; file already in use.

  • Could not lock file.

For more information, see Error in Access when opening a database on a network file share.
