Summary

This security update resolves a Microsoft Outlook remote code execution vulnerability. To learn more about the vulnerability, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2024-21413.

Note: To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Microsoft Office 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (See What version of Office am I using?)

Improvements and fixes

After you install KB 5002457 (but not together with KB 5002498), a cross-update dependency is introduced that prevents Office applications from starting. This update eliminates the dependency and allows the applications to start even if both updates are not installed. However, both updates should be installed to address the original security issue.
