Symptoms

If you configure new runtime by changing the default R or Python language runtime version, and remove a patch between Cumulative Update 22 (CU22) and CU26 from the SQL Server 2017 RTM baseline, sp_execute_external_script fails.

Resolution

This issue is fixed in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:

Workaround

To work around the issue, you can use the following method:

After removing the affected CU patch, you can uninstall the SQL Server Machine Learning Services R or Python features, and then reinstall it on the SQL Server 2017 RTM baseline.
