Applies ToWindows 7 Service Pack 1 Windows 7 Enterprise Windows 7 Ultimate Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Windows Server 2008 R2 Web Edition

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • Multiple processors are installed on a computer that is running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

  • The Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA) feature is enabled on the computer.

  • You run an SUA-based application on the computer.

In this scenario, the SUA-based application may stop responding. For example, when you run IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS), the subsystem may stop responding if a script that calls the ksh command many times is executed. Note This issue also occurs on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 if KB978048 is installed. For more information about KB978048, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

978048 The SUA application stops responding when you run a mixed-mode SUA application that calls the fork function on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Cause

The issue occurs because of a race condition that occurs in SUA.
