Applies ToWindows 7 Professional Windows 7 Enterprise Windows 7 Ultimate Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have the Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA) feature installed on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You mount a network file system (NFS) shared resource on the computer.

  • You run the chgrp command to change the owner group of a file in the shared resource from one group to another group.

In this scenario, the owner group of the file is changed to root, regardless of the group that you actually specified.

Cause

When Windows-based credentials are mapped to UNIX-based credentials, users and groups are treated as being identical. This behavior causes the user identifier (UID) of the returned UNIX credentials to be treated as a group.Note The expected behavior is that the UID of the returned UNIX credentials is treated as a user, and the group identifier (GID) of the returned UNIX credentials is treated as a group.

Resolution
