Summary

This update changes the default setting in Internet Explorer 11 for the desktop to disable Enhanced Protected Mode. During the preview releases of Windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer 11, we enabled Enhanced Protected Mode by default in both the desktop and immersive modes of Internet Explorer. This was done so that we could receive feedback and data about sites that use add-ons that are incompatible with Enhanced Protected Mode.

The data we received from our releases let us identify and work site owners and software developers to update their sites to a plug-in-free experience, or to provide new versions of their plug-ins that are compatible with Enhanced Protected Mode. You can find more information about how to make plug-ins compatible with Internet Explorer 11 and Enhanced Protected Mode here.

Note We recommend that you enable Enhanced Protected Mode if you are using compatible add-ons. This setting can be manually changed by using the Internet Options command in Internet Explorer, and then clicking the Enable Enhanced Protected Modesetting on the Advanced tab. Enterprise administrators can also use Group Policy to enable Enhanced Protected Mode on users' computers.
