Symptoms

Assume that you use Microsoft SQL Server 2016, 2017 or 2019. When you enable trace flag (TF) 3924 to clean orphaned Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC) transactions in sqlmin!XactMgr::CleanOrphanedXacts, you may notice that an access violation (AV) occurs. Additionally, you may receive a series of dump files.


Note TF 3924 is introduced in KB 3145492 to clean up orphaned DTC transactions.

Status

The issue was initially fixed through the following Knowledge Base article:

4511816 FIX: Access violation occurs when you enable TF 3924 to clean orphaned DTC transactions in SQL Server 2016


4511816 reduces the frequency of the issue. However, it cannot completely fix the issue. This new fix is intended to completely address the issue.

This issue is fixed in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:
