Bug: #50003840 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You install the release version of one of the following editions:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard x86 or x64 edition

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Developer x86, x64, or IA-64 edition

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise x86, x64, or IA-64 edition

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Workgroup x86 or x64 edition

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Web x86 or x64 edition

You install the SQL Server 2008 Client Tools. However, you do not have SQL Server 2008 Integration Services installed. When you create and then execute a maintenance plan, you receive the following error message in the job history:

The SQL Server Execute Package Utility requires Integration Services to be installed by one of these editions of SQL Server 2008: Standard, Enterprise, Developer, or Evaluation. To install Integration Services, run SQL Server Setup and select Integration Services. The package execution failed. The step failed.

960484 Cumulative update package 3 for SQL Server 2008Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Workaround

To work around this issue, install the Integration Services component from one of the following editions:

  • SQL Server 2008 Standard x86 or x64 edition

  • SQL Server 2008 Developer x86, x64, or IA-64 edition

  • SQL Server 2008 Enterprise x86, x64, or IA-64 edition

If you are running one of the editions that are listed here, you only have to rerun the Setup program and then select Add Features to an Existing Installation. However, if you are running a SQL Server 2008 Web edition or a SQL Server 2008 Workgroup edition, you cannot work around this issue directly by using the Setup program. To work around this issue, you must install a new instance of SQL Server 2008 by using one of the editions that are listed here or install the hotfix.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1.

More Information

This hotfix removes the requirement that maintenance plans can only be executed on servers where SQL Server 2008 Integration Services are installed. After you install this hotfix, maintenance plans can be executed even when SQL Server 2008 Integration Services are not installed on the server.
