Symptoms

If you set the -ms-clear pseudo element to display:none when a document is rendered in a document mode that has a value of less than 10, the Clear button in an HTML input text field isn't disabled.

Resolution

To fix this problem, install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. To do this, go to Microsoft Update. Additionally, see the technical information about the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer.

This update was first included in the MS16-037: Security update for Internet Explorer: April 12, 2016.

Note To enable this fix, you also have to enable the FEATURE_HIDE_INPUT_ACTIONPART FeatureControl registry subkey. For the steps to add the necessary registry entries, see the "More Information" section.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Important
Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

After you apply this update, you must create and set the FEATURE_HIDE_INPUT_ACTIONPART registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps:

For x86-based operating systems

  1. In Registry Editor, locate and then select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl

  2. Press and hold (or right-click) FeatureControl, point to New, and then select Key.

  3. Enter FEATURE_HIDE_INPUT_ACTIONPART, and then press Enter to name the new registry subkey.

  4. Press and hold (or right-click) FEATURE_HIDE_INPUT_ACTIONPART, point to New, and then select DWORD Value.

  5. Type iexplore.exe, and then press Enter to name the new entry.

  6. Press and hold (or right-click) iexplore.exe, and then select Modify.

  7. In the Value data box, enter 1, and then click OK.

  8. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the browser to enable the new registry subkey.

For x64-based operating systems

  1. In Registry Editor, locate and then select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl

  2. Press and hold (or right-click) FeatureControl, point to New, and then select Key.

  3. Enter FEATURE_HIDE_INPUT_ACTIONPART, and then press Enter to name the new registry subkey.

  4. Press and hold (or right-click) FEATURE_HIDE_INPUT_ACTIONPART, point to New, and then select DWORD Value.

  5. Type iexplore.exe, and then press Enter to name the new entry.

  6. Press and hold (or right-click) iexplore.exe, and then select Modify.

  7. In the Value data box, enter 1, and then click OK.

  8. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the browser to enable the new registry subkey.
