While the toggle is enabled, if you try to launch classic Outlook for Windows or Windows Mail you'll be automatically redirected to the new Outlook for Windows.

Note: New Outlook is still in preview for work or school accounts licensed for Outlook use. (These accounts are typically assigned to you by your organization's admin, and it's the account you use when signing in to Microsoft services at work or school.)

Going back to classic Outlook for Windows

If you toggled into the new Outlook for Windows preview from classic Outlook for Windows, every time you try to launch classic Outlook for Windows you'll be redirected to the new Outlook for Windows preview. You can go back to classic Outlook for Windows by selecting the toggle in the new Outlook for Windows app.

If for some reason you don’t see a toggle in the new Outlook for Windows, try these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Make sure you try to launch classic Outlook for Windows from the Windows Start Menu, not the new Outlook for Windows. The new Outlook for Windows has a “New” tag on its app icon. For classic Outlook, select the icon without a “New” tag.

  2. From the Windows Start Menu, type “Registry Editor” in the search box and select the Registry Editor app.

  3. Navigate to the following path: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences

  4. Scroll to the bottom of the list to and double click on UseNewOutlook.

  5. Enter 0 in the Value Data field.

  6. Attempt to launch classic Outlook for Windows from the Windows Start Menu.

Tip: Remember to choose the app icon that doesn't have a New tag.

Going back to Windows Mail or Calendar

If you toggled into the new Outlook for Windows preview from Windows Mail or Calendar, every time you try to launch Windows Mail or Calendar you will be redirected to the new Outlook for Windows preview. You can go back to Windows Mail or Calendar by clicking on the toggle in the new Outlook for Windows preview.

If for some reason you don’t see a toggle in the new Outlook for Windows, try these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Make sure you have tried to launch Windows Mail or Calendar from the Windows Start Menu, not the new Outlook for Windows. The new Outlook for Windows has a “New” tag on its app icon.

  2. Open Windows File Explorer.

  3. In the top ribbon, select View > Show > Hidden Items.

  4. Navigate to this path: C:\Users\[YourUserName]\AppData\Local\Packages\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Migration.

Tip: Alternatively, you can start by navigating to This PC > Users and then selecting your own username (e.g. JSmith). From there, go to AppData > Local > Packages > microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe > LocalState > Migration.

  5. Select the settings.json file and delete it (press the delete key on your keyboard or right click and then delete).

  6. Launch Windows Mail or Calendar from the Windows Start Menu.

Tip: Remember to choose the app icon that doesn't have a “New” tag.

Selecting the toggle will take you back to either classic Outlook for Windows or Windows Mail, depending on which app you entered the new Outlook for Windows preview from.
