Type Cover

Применимо к: Surface DevicesSurface

A Type Cover is a slim keyboard with moving keys. Use it to get the speed and feel of a classic keyboard, and to go from tablet to laptop.

Type Covers click magnetically into place and provide protection for your Surface touchscreen. All Surface Type Covers have a standard keyboard layout, shortcut keys, and a two-button touchpad that supports touch gestures.

For more info about touchpad taps and gestures, see Touchpad gestures for Windows 10 and Try the latest touchpad gestures .

Click the Cover into place

The Type Cover attaches magnetically to your Surface. Bring the two close together until the Cover aligns and clicks into place.

Once the Cover is connected, it stays put. When you want to remove it, just pull it away.

With some Type Covers, you can pleat the back edge of it up against your Surface. This provides extra stability when you’re working on your lap.

Fold the Cover back

Fold the Cover back behind the screen to use your Surface as a tablet. Your Surface won’t detect key presses while it’s folded.

To type text while the Cover is back, tap the screen anywhere you can type and the touch keyboard appears.

Close the Cover

Type Cover protects the screen when you aren’t using it. The screen turns off automatically when you close the Cover. When you open it again, press the power button on your Surface to wake it.

Use the fingerprint reader

The Surface Pro 4 Type Cover with Fingerprint ID includes a fingerprint reader that you can use to sign in to your PC.

Use the touchpad

Your touchpad has right-click and left-click buttons and supports gestures. For detailed info about the touchpad gestures, see Touchpad gestures for Windows 10 and Try the latest touchpad gestures.

Adjust touchpad settings

If the touchpad is too quick to respond to accidental touches or you want to turn the touchpad off altogether, you can change a setting to make it work the way you like.

  1. Attach the Cover to your Surface.
(If you have a Wireless Adapter for Typing Covers, attach the Cover directly to your Surface.)
  2. Go to Start , and select Settings > Devices > Touchpad.
  3. Make the changes you want.

Lock keys into function mode

If you’re using an app that uses function keys a lot, you can lock the top row of keys temporarily so the function keys stick.

When the function keys are locked, pressing a key on the top row gives you the function key (like F3 instead of ). Pressing Fn plus the key gives you the special key. For example, to mute the speaker, press Fn+ .

To lock and unlock the Fn keys:

  • Type Cover, Type Cover 2, and Type Cover for Surface Pro 3
Hold down the Fn key and press the Caps key to lock the function keys. Press Fn+Caps again to unlock them.
  • Surface 3 Type Cover, Type Cover for Surface Pro 4, and Surface Pro Signature Type Cover
Press the Fn key to lock the function keys. Press the Fn key again to unlock them.
A light appears on the Fn key when you’ve locked the keys into function mode.

Add an input language to your Surface

Surface Covers are available for a number of languages and alphabets. If your Cover has a key marked Alt Gr, you can use it as you would Ctrl+Alt.

You can also set up your Surface to use other languages and keyboard layouts. See How to add an input language to your PC and How to switch input languages in Windows to learn more. These settings stay with your Surface and apply to any Cover you attach. If you use your Cover on another Surface, the input language settings for that Surface will apply.
