Connect and use Surface Duo in your car

Use your Surface Duo in your car to make hands-free calls, get directions, messages and more. There are two ways to do this—depending on your car's hands-free system:

  1. Pair your Surface Duo using Bluetooth in your car. Use this if your car doesn't support Android Auto. To get started, pair Surface Duo to the Bluetooth system in your car. The specific steps vary by car manufacturer, so see the documentation for your car or visit the car manufacturer's website for specific details.

  2. Use the Android app. Use this if your car supports Android Auto. You can connect your Surface Duo to your car's display using a USB cable or project wirelessly (if your car supports it).

1. Pair Surface Duo using Bluetooth in your car

  1. When you’re safely parked in your car, on your car’s Bluetooth system, find the Bluetooth device pairing option or something similar, and then follow the voice prompts.
Many times, you can get to this Bluetooth device pairing option from the main menu on your car’s system.

  2. When prompted by your car’s system, on your Surface Duo, swipe down from the top of the screen, then tap and hold Bluetooth  in quick settings.

  3. Tap Pair new device, then tap the name of your car’s system.

  4. If you were prompted to enter a PIN for your car’s system, enter that same PIN on your Surface Duo, then tap Pair.

2. Use Surface Duo with Android Auto

Use your Surface Duo and the Android Auto app to make hands-free calls, get directions, listen to music, and more in your car. You can download the Android Auto app from the Google Play Store. For more info about how to set it up, see Set up your Android Auto app on the Android Auto Help site.

Some car manufacturers support Android Auto, so you can plug a USB cable into your Surface Duo and your car’s system or wirelessly project the display that's in your car. To find out more about which cars support it, see the Android Auto site.

For cars without Android Auto

If your car's system doesn't have Android Auto, you can connect it using Bluetooth (as described in the steps above), download the Android Auto app, and then open the app when you're in your car.

Remember, when using your Surface Duo in your car, make sure you’re safe to use it.
