Why has my credit/debit card been charged when I haven't made a Skype purchase?

If you notice a Skype charge on your credit or debit card, then please check these scenarios to determine the cause:

To check your purchase history, sign in to your account and compare any recent orders you’ve made with the charge on your bank statement. Note that the price may differ if VAT has been added. Get more help with checking your purchase history

Note: If you're using iPhone or iPad and the Purchase history option isn't available, then you may need to clear the history and cookies on your device and sign in again.

Check the order status . If the order status is DELIVERED, it means that the purchase has been added to your account and Skype has charged your card.

If you don’t recognize the charge, contact customer service and request a refund. We give refunds for Skype products in accordance with the refund policy section of Skype's Terms of Use . Learn more about requesting a refund .

Did you previously purchase Skype Credit?

If you have previously purchased Skype Credit, you may have Auto-recharge set up on your account. Auto-recharge automatically tops up your credit when it falls below a certain amount, to ensure you never run out.

If you no longer wish to top up your Skype Credit, you can disable Auto-recharge in your account.

Do you have a subscription?

If you have signed up for a subscription, it’s renewed automatically at the end of the initial period, and the recurring payment is made with the payment method you used to sign up. To stop the recurring payments, you need to cancel your subscription .

Does your card provider participate in an Account Updater program?

Skype is enrolled in the Visa Account Updater®, and MasterCard Automatic Billing Updater® programs. These programs prevent the interruption of your auto-renewing subscriptions if your credit card is lost or expires. If your credit card expires, Skype may receive your new credit card information from your financial institution.

For more information, or to opt out, contact your card provider.

When you sign up for a free trial, you may see a pending transaction of €1, £1, $1 or equivalent on your bank statement. Don't worry, you won't need to pay this amount. You'll see it as a pending transaction on your bank statement and the charge is canceled as soon as your payment method is validated.

It’s possible that your card has been used fraudulently to buy Skype Credit. We take every precaution to ensure that only genuine transactions get processed; however, criminals have developed several techniques to gain access to an individuals’ credit/debit card information.

If you suspect your card has been used fraudulently, please reach out to your bank or financial institution to cancel or refund the transaction, and also request for a new card so that the situation does not occur again.
