In addition to the broader lists of best practices for DAX Copilot, here are some important suggestions related to the emergency department setting:

Ambient recording

  • Pre-chart important information in the initial ambient recording. Include patient identifiers such as the patient's age and gender, and any relevant PMH that may be appropriate to include in the HPI section of your note. (e.g., “the patient is a 55-year-old male with chest pain with past medical history of coronary artery disease and heart catheterization. Comes in today for chest pain.”)

  • Record often! Create ambient recordings to capture important information related to the patient at any time during your shift. Use DAX Copilot to record handoffs or conversations with other care team members, lab results that you review, orders you place, and more.

    • History & Physical or initial evaluations.

    • Interval notes (TIP: Verbalize the time at the start of the recording if you want the time to appear in your note.)

    • Afinal recording to summarize your Final Impression,Disposition, and Critical Care Time (if applicable).

Important: The more you record, the better your generated note summaries will be.

  • Create "monologue" ambient recordings. Use DAX Copilot to recap an interaction with the patient outside the patient's room, or to capture information for your note in other situations such as:

    • Lab results that you review, and orders you place.

    • Sensitive findings you prefer not to verbalize in front of the patient.

    • Encounters with disoriented, comatose, non-verbal, or uncooperative patients.

Tip: The combined transcript of all the ambient recordings you create for the same note contribute to the note sections that DAX Copilot generates. Creating additional recordings can save you valuable time editing your final note.

  • Disable any Bluetooth devices with a microphone connected to your mobile device before you begin ambient recording.

  • While recording, ensure proper device placement so the microphone on the device is not obstructed (e.g., in your breast pocket upside down) to ensure clear recording.

  • Modify the Do Not Disturb settings on your mobile device to reduce interruptions while recording - but still ensure that you still receive important secure chat messages and paging notifications.

Note format and style

  • Verify your Primary specialty setting is set to “Emergency medicine” in your Profile in DAX Copilot. When selected, DAX Copilot will generate your clinical summaries and documents in a format optimized for emergency medicine. (NOTE: If you consult in the ED and are not an ED clinician, select the appropriate Primary specialty for your practice to get the best output for your consult notes and documents.)

  • Consider using a customizable template for the Physical Exam section in the DAX Copilot activity to allow you to document by exception and personalize the generated PE summary for your note. We do not recommend selecting customizable template as the default format for the HPI, Results, or A/P sections at this time. If necessary, apply the customizable template after completing all recordings.

Note workflow considerations

  • Can DAX Copilot generate interval/workup notes from ambient recordings? Yes. Create additional ambient recordings during the patient’s care to document interventions, lab results, etc. These workup notes will appear in a separate section within the Assessment & Plan summary that DAX Copilot generates – if ‘Emergency medicine’ is set as your Primary specialty. (TIP: To automatically include time stamps in the workup section of the A&P, you must verbalize/record the time at the beginning of the new ambient recording.)

  • Can others contribute ambient recordings for the same note? No. Only one person may contribute recordings for a single note, but you and other clinicians may create multiple notes for the same patient on the same day.
