Make phone calls directly from Microsoft Teams using the dial pad, just like a traditional phone. You can call phone numbers, search for contacts by name, or start group calls with multiple people — all from the Calls section in Teams.

Call a phone number

Dial an external or internal phone number directly from the Teams dial pad.

  1. Select Calls Calls button on the left side of Teams.

  2. Enter the phone number using the dial pad or your keyboard.

  3. Select Call.

Tip: You can enter numbers using your physical keyboard, the on-screen dial pad, or paste a number from your clipboard.

Call a contact by name

Search for someone in your organization or contacts list without their phone number.

  1. Select Calls  Calls button in Teams.

  2. In the dial pad, start typing the person's name.

  3. Select the person from the dropdown.

  4. Select Call.

Note: The contact dropdown is not available when using a laptop's touch screen to enter text on the dial pad. Use your keyboard to search for contacts by name.

Start a group call

Call multiple people at once by adding them before you dial.

  1. Select Calls  Calls button in Teams.

  2. In the dial pad, enter a name or number and select the person from the dropdown.

  3. Continue adding names or numbers for each person you want to include.

  4. Select Call to start the group call.

Use multiple phone lines

If your admin has assigned more than one phone number to your account, all your lines appear in the Calls view. You can choose which number to call from and see activity across all your lines in one place.

Choose which line to call from

  1. Select Calls Calls button in Teams.

  2. At the top of the Calls view, select the number tab for the line you want to use, or select the dropdown next to Call as myself under the dial pad.

  3. Dial the number or search for a contact, then select Call Calls button.

Tip: Choosing a local number when calling customers in a specific region makes the incoming call appear local, which can help build trust.

Return a call from a specific line

  1. In your History, find the call you want to return.

  2. Select the call dropdown next to the entry.

  3. Choose which of your assigned numbers to call back from.

Identify which line a call came in on

Each entry in your call history includes a tag showing which phone number the call was made from or received on. When you receive an incoming call, the notification shows which of your lines is being called. This helps you tailor your greeting based on the role or region associated with that number.

Note: Your admin can assign up to 10 phone numbers to your account. Contact your IT admin to set up additional lines.

Use the dial pad during a call

Access the dial pad mid-call to enter extension numbers, navigate phone menus (IVR), or enter DTMF tones.

  1. While on a call, go to your call controls at the top of the call window.

  2. Select Dial pad  Dial pad button.

  3. Use the on-screen dial pad to enter tones (for example, "Press 1 for Sales").

Emergency calling

Important: You won't be able to make a 911 emergency call if Teams isn't connected to the internet. To learn more about emergency calling in Teams, see Manage emergency calling.
