Follow these steps if you're using Copilot and you receive an error that says:

We encountered a problem validating your Copilot license. For more information, see https://aka.ms/copilotlicensecheck

Make sure you're using the correct account

First, make sure you're signed in. On https://microsoft365.com, look in the upper right corner and if you don't see your account profile, select Sign in.

Shows the Microsoft 365 page with a generic account icon in the upper right corner.

If you're signed in already, you may be signed in with an account that doesn't have a Copilot license. Try selecting your account icon in the upper right corner of the page, then select Sign in with a different account.

Is this a work file?

Another reason you might see this error is if you're working on a file from your work or school but using the Copilot that's from your Microsoft 365 Family or Personal account at home.

If your organization provides Copilot, make sure you're signed into that account (see above) in order to use Copilot with files from your organization.

Check file location

Some users may encounter an issue when trying to access Microsoft 365 Copilot in Microsoft 365apps when the file is hosted in a third-party storage location. In this scenario, users may encounter a license validation or other error message. While we work to address this issue, users can move or copy the file to OneDrive or SharePoint before using Copilot with that file. For more information on this experience please contact your Microsoft Account Manager or third-party storage vendor.

For the web apps - Enable third-party cookies

Due to technical limitations we're working to address, validating your Copilot license requires your web browser to support third-party cookies. These are often blocked by default in Incognito/InPrivate mode, or in some browsers such as Safari. If you choose to enable third-party cookies, here's how you can do that.

In Microsoft Edge

  1. Select Settings and More > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Manage and delete cookies and site data.

  2. Ensure Block third-party cookies is set to Off.
