How to enable or disable the Clipchamp video editor for users in your organization

Applies To
Clipchamp for work accounts

Note

This article is for Microsoft 365 admins. It covers access to the Clipchamp video editor and its Windows app. To manage individual features instead, see How to enable or disable features in Clipchamp for users in your organization.

Users need an eligible license with the Microsoft Clipchamp service enabled to use the editor with a work or school account, whether they open it in a browser or in the Windows app.

Use Microsoft 365 licensing to manage work or school access for individual users or groups. Windows app policies give you more control over the desktop app. They don't grant a license or block browser access.

Clipchamp's availability in Microsoft 365 SKUs

Before assigning or changing a license, check the eligible subscriptions in the work or school account FAQ, including the requirements for Original, Extra Features, and Student Use Benefit licenses.

Don't rely on a product name alone. Check the product names and service plan identifiers and the licenses in your tenant. The standard editor service is:

Property Value
ServicePlanName CLIPCHAMP
ServicePlanId a1ace008-72f3-4ea0-8dac-33b3a23a2472

Additional notes on availability

Assigning an eligible license usually turns on its services, unless your organization changes the assignment. If Clipchamp is supplied through an Extra Features license, make sure that license is also assigned.

If a user has an eligible license but can't open the editor, check that the Clipchamp service is enabled and troubleshoot licensing or provisioning issues. Turning on the Windows app alone doesn't fix a missing or disabled service plan.

Managing Clipchamp availability for individual users

For direct user assignments, use the Microsoft 365 admin center or Microsoft Graph PowerShell. You need permission to manage licenses, such as the License Administrator or User Administrator role.

Change the Clipchamp service setting, not the user's entire Microsoft 365 license. Removing the product license can also remove access to other services. If the license is inherited from a group, manage the group assignment instead.

Enable or disable Clipchamp through the admin center

  1. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Billing > Licenses.
  2. Select the product that provides Clipchamp, then select the user's direct assignment.
  3. In the details pane, select Microsoft Clipchamp to enable the service, or clear it to disable the service. Leave other apps and services unchanged.
  4. Select Save, then select Close.

For more information, or to assign a license to a user who doesn't have one yet, see Assign or unassign licenses in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Enable or disable Clipchamp through PowerShell

Important

The MSOnline PowerShell module is retired. Replace older examples that use New-MsolLicenseOptions, Get-MsolUser, or Set-MsolUserLicense with Microsoft Graph PowerShell.

Use Get-MgSubscribedSku to identify the product and its service plans, and Get-MgUserLicenseDetail to inspect the user's licenses. For a directly assigned license, use Set-MgUserLicense to update the Clipchamp service setting.

When updating the selected product's DisabledPlans:

  • To disable Clipchamp, add its service plan ID to the existing list.
  • To enable Clipchamp, remove only its service plan ID from that list.
  • Preserve the other disabled service plans. Replacing the list with only the Clipchamp ID, or clearing the list, can unintentionally enable other services.

For connection requirements, permissions, and command examples, see Disable access to Microsoft 365 services with Microsoft Graph PowerShell.

Managing Clipchamp availability for groups of users

Use group-based licensing in the Microsoft 365 admin center to apply a Clipchamp service setting to members of a group.

  • When assigning a product license to a group, expand Turn apps and services on or off and select or clear Microsoft Clipchamp.
  • Change the apps and services on the group's existing license assignment, not on individual users.
  • For PowerShell automation, use Set-MgGroupLicense. Preserve the other disabled service plans in the group's product assignment.

Check all assignments that provide Clipchamp to a user, including direct assignments and other groups. Disabling it in one assignment might leave access enabled through another.

Group license changes can take time to process. Review the product's Errors & issues tab in the admin center, and check the affected users' resulting licenses.

Disabling services for specific departments or locations only

For ongoing department or location controls, use a group containing the affected users and manage its Clipchamp service setting. Review the group's membership before making changes. Group-based licensing doesn't automatically include members of nested groups.

Also check whether these users receive Clipchamp through another license assignment. A department-specific group doesn't override an assignment that still enables the service.

Managing availability of Clipchamp's desktop app for Windows

The current Clipchamp Windows app supports personal and work or school Microsoft accounts. Deploy an up-to-date app version before relying on account or policy controls. For sign-in guidance, see Accessing Clipchamp through its Windows app.

Use these separate management options:

These policies control the Windows app only. They don't disable Clipchamp in a browser or change Microsoft 365 license assignments.

Group Policy options

The Clipchamp templates define two policies:

Policy Enabled or Not configured Disabled
Enable Clipchamp desktop app Allows the Windows app to run. Blocks the Windows app for both personal and work or school accounts.
Allow Clipchamp for personal accounts Allows personal accounts if the app itself is allowed. Blocks personal accounts in the Windows app. Work or school access still requires an eligible license with Clipchamp enabled.

To allow only work or school accounts, allow the desktop app and set Allow Clipchamp for personal accounts to Disabled. The personal-account policy doesn't override a disabled desktop-app policy.

The following screenshot shows these settings in Local Group Policy Editor, not the Intune admin center:

Managing the desktop app

App deployment and access policies serve different purposes. Installing the app doesn't grant access to the work or school editor, and removing it doesn't prevent browser access.

After assigning a policy, allow it to reach the target users or devices. Have users close and reopen Clipchamp, then verify the result on a managed device. If user-targeted and device-targeted settings conflict, check the effective policy.

User experience

  • If a policy disables the desktop app, users who open an installed copy see a message that it's disabled.
  • If personal accounts are blocked but the app is allowed, users must use an eligible work or school account.
  • If the app is allowed, users might be signed in automatically or might need to sign in. Enabling the app in Intune doesn't guarantee automatic sign-in or access to the editor.
  • If personal accounts are also allowed, users can sign in with a personal account or a work or school account. Access and projects depend on the account they use.
