Troubleshoot MSN video tools and monetization issues
This page helps partners resolve issues related to video publishing, uploader tool errors, and revenue fluctuations. Learn how to troubleshoot common problems with file format, ingestion, monetization discrepancies, and traffic drops.
Ensure your file is in a supported format (e.g., MP4, MPEG, WMV) with a valid file extension (e.g., .mp4). Files without extensions or exceeding 2GB may fail ingestion. Also verify your internet connection and do not close the upload window before completion.
Only videos uploaded via MRSS feeds or the Video Uploader Tool are eligible for Watch. Videos must pass content moderation and meet minimum quality standards, including being longer than 10 seconds and free of glitches.
Revenue depends on ad impressions, not just views. Not all videos trigger pre-roll ads, and lower eCPMs due to seasonality or market slowdowns may result in revenue plateaus.
MSN calculates video earnings using eRPM by market. Monthly revenue = video starts × eRPM for your market. Revenue from embedded videos is pooled and paid proportionally based on stream starts.
Use 16:9 or vertical formats with clear titles, accurate metadata, and optional thumbnails (150x150px or larger, PNG/JPG/GIF up to 20MB). Avoid blurry visuals and double-check for stuttering, audio sync issues, or broken files before uploading.
You cannot edit video files after upload. To correct metadata or thumbnails, delete the video, update your source file, and re-upload it as a new video.
Only videos hosted by MSN are eligible for monetization. Third-party embeds (e.g., YouTube) are not monetized. Ensure you're uploading videos through MRSS or the uploader tool and including required metadata like title and attribution.
