How to install Office 2010 x64-bit

Symptoms

When you try to install Office 2010 using the installation DVD in a computer running Windows 64-bit only Office 32-bit is installed.

Cause

When you are using the installation DVD to install Office 2010 using the default installation interface setup the architecture will be chosen based on the following table:

Note: 32-bit Office 2010 is selected by default due potential compatibility issues when using the 64-bit version.Note: Office 2010 Click-to-Run can be installed in a 64-bit Windows version but the Office architecture will be only 32-bit. This behavior is by design.




Resolution

Before install Office 2010 x64-bit you need to check if your computer is running a supported x64-bit Windows version. You can only install Office 2010 x64-bit if you are running an x64-bit Windows version. To check if what are the Windows version and architecture you are running please read the article “Is my PC running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows?


Important: If you have any Microsoft Office 32-bit installed you will need to uninstall before to install Microsoft Office 2010 x64-bit.



Installing Office 2010 x64-bit

Make sure that you are running and supported x64-bit Windows version to install Office 2010 x64-bit. If you are not sure about this, please read the session above.

 

Note: Office 2010 Click-to-Run can be installed in a 64-bit Windows version but the Office architecture will be only 32-bit. This behavior is by design.

 
  1. Insert the Office 2010 installation DVD;
  2. Click Start, Computer, right click in the DVD-drive where the Office 2010 installation disk was inserted and select “Open”;
  3. Open the x64 folder in the installation DVD root and then run the Setup.exe.
  4. Follow the installation instructions.
