KB5021189: Windows Server containers for November 2022

Applies To
Windows Servers

Microsoft Windows Server containers

As part of servicing each month, we publish updated Windows Server Base OS container images. With these updates, you can automate building updated container images or manually update them by pulling the latest version. Windows Server containers do not have a servicing stack and do not support in-place updates like Windows Server or Windows client. Therefore, every month we rebuild the Windows Server Base OS container images with the updates and publish the updated container images.

For more information on update best practices, please refer to Update Windows Server containers.

Note

REMINDER

  • Windows Server, version 1903 reached end of service on December 8, 2020 for devices running the Datacenter or Standard editions. We recommend updating to the latest version of Windows Server. For more information about these editions of Windows Server, version 1903, see here.
  • Windows Server, version 1909 reached end of service on May 11, 2021 for devices running the Datacenter or Standard editions. We recommend updating to the latest version of Windows Server. For more information about these editions of Windows Server, version 1909, see here.
  • Windows Server, version 2004 reached end of service on December 14, 2021 for devices running the Datacenter or Standard editions. We recommend updating to the latest version of Windows Server. For more information about these editions of Windows Server, version 2004, see here.
  • Windows Server containers for Windows Server 20H2 reached end of service on August 9, 2022 for Windows Server, Nano Server, and Windows Server Core. We recommend updating to the latest version of Windows Server. For more information, see here.

Note

Note For all Windows Server 2019 images (Windows Server, Nano Server, and Windows Server Core), we now default to tag LTSC2019. However, you can continue to use the 1809 tag (as before) to pull the latest Nano Server and Windows image.

  • Windows Server version 1809, Windows 10 version 1809, and Windows Server 2019
  • Windows Server 2016

Note

NOTE Because of a required change in how the Windows container image (mcr.microsoft.com/windows:ltsc2019) is generated for Windows Server 2019, there will not be a delta container image for the November 2022 release. Instead of the delta container image, the release for November 2022 will be a new full container image that will replace the original RTM layer going forward. Future delta releases will use the November 2022 container as the new baseline.

Note

IMPORTANT The Windows image download size is a one-time increase which will increase the download time. Later releases will include smaller delta images. This change does not affect Nano Server and Server Core images for Windows Server 2019 or any of the images for Windows Server 2022.
