Microsoft Teams for personal use (also called Teams Free) availability changes in China

Microsoft is taking steps to align the service experience with this existing support boundary and clarify the intended availability of Teams personal experiences. As part of these changes, Microsoft Teams for personal use (also called Teams Free) is no longer available on mobile devices in China. Desktop and web will become unavailable beginning on July 28th, 2026. This change applies only to accounts where you sign in to with a personal Microsoft account.

What’s changing

  • Mobile: Teams for personal use is no longer supported on mobile devices in China.

  • Desktop and Web: Teams for personal use will be discontinued on the web and desktop devices in China starting on July 28th, 2026.

Users currently accessing Teams for personal use from China on desktop and web should plan for this upcoming change.

What this means for you

  • You will no longer be able to use Teams for personal use from within China.

  • Teams for personal use availability outside of China isn't affected by this change.

Continued access to other services

This change applies only to Teams for personal use in China. It does not impact your ability to:

  • Access Teams for work or school as a guest while using your personal account on web or mobile. Go to Teams on the web or the mobile app to sign in with guest access.

  • You can use Skype Dial Pad and login using your personal account. Skype Dial Pad is only available for users who currently have an active subscription, active Skype number, or active Skype Credits. Learn more about Skype Dial Pad.

  • Use Microsoft Teams (work or school). If you have access to a work or school account, you can continue to use Teams with your organization’s policies.
