You can remove a hyperlink from a single address, remove many links at once, turn automatic hyperlinks off, and turn off the requirement to press Ctrl to follow a hyperlink.

To remove a hyperlink but keep the text, right-click the hyperlink and select Remove Hyperlink (Remove Link in Outlook).

Right click menu, Remove Hyperlink

To remove the hyperlink completely, select it and then press Delete.

In Excel:

If the hyperlink was created using the HYPERLINK function, you can remove the hyperlink by using the following steps:

  1. Select the cell containing the hyperlink.
  2. Press CTRL+C to copy the hyperlink.
  3. Right Click and paste using the Values paste option.

In Word

  1. Press Ctrl+A to select all text.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+F9.

Note

On some laptops and keyboards, you might need to press the Fn key with F9. If your keyboard doesn't have an F9 key, right-click a hyperlink and select Remove Hyperlink to remove links individually.

In Excel:

  • Select all cells that contain hyperlinks, or press Ctrl+A to select all cells.
  • Right-click, and then click Remove Hyperlinks.

When it’s not convenient to have Word automatically create hyperlinks in your document as you type, you can turn them off. This setting prevents web addresses and network paths from automatically becoming hyperlinks as you type.

  1. Select File > Options > Proofing.

  2. Select AutoCorrect Options, and then click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.

  3. Clear the Internet and network paths with hyperlinks check box.

For Outlook, see Stop text from turning into a hyperlink.

By default, Word requires you to press Ctrl when you click to follow a hyperlink. This extra step keeps you from accidentally going to a linked destination while you’re editing a document. Changing this setting affects how you follow existing hyperlinks. It does not turn off automatic hyperlinks. To stop web addresses from automatically becoming hyperlinks as you type, see Turn off automatic hyperlinks above.

If you want to click links without having to press Ctrl, try this:

  1. Select File > Options > Advanced.
  2. Under Editing Options, clear the Use CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink check box.
