- On the Insert menu, select Header and Footer.
- In the Header or Footer sections, select the Left, Center, or Right section, depending on where you want the date or time to appear.
- From the Header & Footer Ribbon menu, select Insert Date or Insert Time. You can also insert the Page Number, Number of Pages, File Path, File Name, and Sheet Name.
- If you want, make the following changes:
To start a new line, press ENTER.
To delete a date or time from a header or footer, select &[Date] or &[Time], and then press DELETE.
- Select OK. The Page Setup dialog box shows a preview of your header or footer.
- On the Insert menu, select Header and Footer.

This feature isn't available in Excel for the web.
If you have the Excel desktop application, you can use the Open in Excel button to open the workbook and insert the date in a header.
